Participants will share their collective wisdom and discuss cutting-edge legal strategies. To create an environment that encourages the free flow of information, registration is limited. The meeting will be closed and the proceedings will not be recorded. The Intellectual Property Law Institute is open to all, including law students.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBetween the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and other national and global conflicts, the past several years have presented a greater level of challenges and uncertainty than most of us have otherwise seen in our lifetimes. Through all of these challenges, IP professionals have needed to continue to pay diligent attention to the portfolios they manage, maintaining their organizations\u2019 and clients\u2019 existing rights, securing new protections, and defending against infringement, all while demonstrating a high value and return on investment. This panel will explore some of the strategies that IP practitioners have employed for navigating difficult and intensive circumstances, such as pandemic-related workflow pivots, the introduction of new laws such as the Trademark Modernization Act, and managing global IP rights when regions in the portfolio may be impacted by crises such as wars and natural disasters.

\nThis session will explore key developments and decisions in the United States patent law space thus far in 2022. Topics will include Federal Circuit decisions of note, as well as developments from the PTAB, ITC and district court; new rules on FINTIV for
\ndiscretionary denial of PTAB trials; an update on where cases are being filed \u2013 and the
\nthreat WACO presents to the LGBT Bar.

\nOver each of the past several decades, the growing digital space has presented a new
\nset of challenges and opportunities for brand owners, requiring them to juggle
\nadditional areas of focus with the \u201ctraditional\u201d brick and mortar world. The 1990s saw
\nthe Internet evolve from primarily a specialized space for governments and academia to a ubiquitous tool for both business and personal communications; the 2000s provided an explosion of social media platforms; the 2010s offered tremendous growth in the use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets; and the 2020s may be poised to take us into the metaverse and alternative domain name systems. Each of these innovations builds upon the last, leaving brand owners with increasingly diverse responsibilities and complex roles as they seek to protect their IP and prevent use by unauthorized parties. This panel will explore how brand owners and IP practitioners are approaching these constantly evolving technologies, creating space in their portfolios and workflows for future trends while maintaining focus on established priority areas of IP protection.
