LGBT Bar Joins Affinity Associations,
Voices Concern Over Sessions Hearing
On Monday, January 9, the LGBT Bar joined the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA), the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), and the National Bar Association (NBA) in voicing our concern with the confirmation process for Senator Jeff Sessions's nomination to the position of Attorney General.
In a letter sent to Senator Chuck Grassley, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, we expressed a deep unease regarding Senator Sessions's incomplete and inadequate response to the Senate Judiciary Questionnaire and urged Senator Grassley to consider a delay in the hearing.
This would not be the first time in his tenure as Chairman that Senator Grassley chose to postpone a confirmation hearing. When President Obama first nominated Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Senator Grassley delayed her confirmation pending a more complete documentation submission.
"We share in [Senator Grassley's] desire to have a full and fair hearing of Senator Sessions' record as [the committee] weigh[s] his qualifications to be the nation's chief law enforcement officer." It is therefore imperative that the hearing is delayed until such a point when Senator Sessions has adequately submitted all of the necessary materials.
