Reintroduction of Bipartisan LGBT Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National LGBT Bar Association – the country’s largest organization of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and allied legal professionals – announces the reintroduction of the Jury ACCESS and Juror Non-Discrimination Acts, in the Senate and House of Representatives respectively, with bipartisan support.

The companion bills ensure that potential jurors are not stricken on the basis of their real or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity/expression, guaranteeing that every American's civic duty to serve on a jury is not infringed upon.

“In this current political climate, the LGBT Bar proudly stands with Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle in order to guarantee that prejudice does not extend to the courtroom. Without equal protection under the law, we cannot ensure that anyone receives a true, Constitutionally guaranteed jury of their peers." said D’Arcy Kemnitz, executive director of the LGBT Bar. "This issue also moves beyond equality to guaranteeing that all Americans are called upon to fulfill their civic duties."

The LGBT Bar commends Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-CA) for their leadership in reintroduction and thanks all of those who signed on as original co-sponsors, including Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) and Congressman Pat Meehan (R-PA).
