Mario Treto, Jr. serves in Illinois Governor Pritzker’s cabinet as the Acting Secretary of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. In this role, Treto oversees the regulation of over 1.2 million licenses including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, realtors, and cosmetologists, almost 200 state-charter credit unions, over 300 state-charter commercial and savings banks, and 15,000 mortgage loan originators, companies, and branches. Previously Treto served as Director of the Division of Real Estate where Treto and his team significantly improved Division efficiencies, including reducing license processing time by 75% and pending prosecutions cases by 50%. Treto spearheaded agency-wide diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, including launching the IDFPR Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, doubling the number of real estate scholarships for minorities, and increasing the Division’s staff and board diversity to reflect the State of Illinois. Previously, Mario served as the Deputy City Attorney for the City of Evanston, where he provided legal counsel to its elected officials, departments, and staff with compliance, transactional, and corporate matters. Mario authored over 600 pieces of legislation, and collaborated with municipalities nationwide in filing amicus briefs on behalf of the City. Treto also worked at a Chicago firm focusing his law practice in commercial & residential real estate, corporate law, and commercial transactions. In addition, Treto serves on various civic boards and committees. He is Chairman of the Howard Brown Health Board of Directors, Indiana University Maurer School of Law Alumni Board Member, Obama Foundation Scholars Program Strategist at the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, and Leadership Greater Chicago Fellow. Treto is a nationally recognized lawyer by various organizations, including the International Municipal Lawyers Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association, and the National LGBT Bar. He has received leadership accolades from Crain’s Business Magazine, Business Equality Magazine, Chicago Scholars, and Hispanic business publication, Negocios Now. In 2018 he was presented with the Humanitario/Humanitarian Annual Award by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Treto is an alumnus of Washington University in St. Louis and the Indiana University Maurer School of Law.
