Transgender people have legal needs, just like anyone else — but often, they are reluctant to speak with an attorney when they need one out of a fear that they will be misunderstood or mistreated. This workshop will give you the terminology and tools you need to interact with transgender clients respectfully and professionally, to understand the unique problems and issues that may come up in your representation of them, and to ensure that you won’t be exactly the kind of attorney that trans people are afraid they’ll run into. This workshop will consist of a “Trans 101” session covering common concepts and terminology used to describe transgender people’s lives, and guidelines for how to interact with them in a way that they will not find disrespectful and dehumanizing. In addition, attorneys with extensive experiencing working with transgender clients will discuss the sorts of unusual problems that can occur when representing a trans person in a variety of fields such as employment law, healthcare access, immigration and asylum, and contract law.
