The Intellectual Property Law Institute is a space for the leading legal minds involved with intellectual property law, as it pertains to the LGBTQ+ community, to share ideas and network. Participants will share their collective wisdom and discuss cutting-edge legal strategies. To create an environment that encourages the free flow of information, registration is limited. The meeting will be closed and the proceedings will not be recorded. The Intellectual Property Law Institute is open to all, including law students.

11:40am-12:30pm | Legislative and Regulatory Updates for Brand Owners 2021 and 2021 have seen an unprecedented number of legislative and regulatory updates in the trademark and copyright space. The Trademark Modernization Act (TMA), passed in late 2020 and due to be implemented in late 2021, has the potential to change a number of requirements and best practices for trademark practice in the United States. The Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement (CASE) Act will provide a number of updates to copyright procedures, and the proposed Stopping Harmful Offers on Platforms by Screening Against Fakes in E-Commerce Act (SHOP SAFE Act), which has been introduced in Congress but not yet passed, seeks to reduce the impact of counterfeiting in digital spaces. This session will explore each of these impending and proposed pieces of legislation, and their impact on how organizations may protect their IP going forward. Download CLE Materials. However, invention in this time of crisis also poses interesting questions for the parties involved. Who will own the rights to the patents for the vaccines and related technology? How will governments, companies, and other organizations balance the public interest with the need to recoup substantial investments in developing new technology?
