The current administration continues to implement policies that harm individuals seeking refuge in the United States at our southern border and interior. The harm inflicted by these policies disproportionately effects vulnerable populations, such as the LGBTQ community. LGBTQ asylum seekers at our southern border are either forced to wait in Mexico via the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP) and metering policies, where they face threats and violence or if permitted to enter, are being detained in facilities with declining health and safety conditions. Even LGBTQ asylum seekers who are not detained and in the United States, face significant backlogs in the immigration courts and asylum office as well as changing regulations that put their eligibility for asylum at risk.
