Stephanie Robin, a Miami native, will start her career in labor and employment law this summer with Fisher & Phillips, with which she interviewed at the 2019 Lavender Law® Career Fair.

“I got my dream job,” Robin told us. “I knew I wanted to do employment law and was hoping to get a job at one of the few national firms that specialize in labor and employment law. I could not have foreseen that my trip to Philadelphia to attend Lavender Law® would result in my getting a job at one of the finest firms in the country for the type of law I want to do.”

Robin spoke with the Colorado and Philadelphia partners of the firm first. “I felt an immediate connection with both of the partners,” she noted. “The time flew by and we didn’t want to stop talking!”

Fisher & Phillips followed up after the conference, and asked Robin to interview in person for an opening in their Philadelphia office. She “clicked” with those interviewers as well, and felt excited at the prospect of working with them – which she is now poised to do upon graduation.

Robin, who currently attends the University of Miami School of Law, will graduate in May 2020. She first heard about Lavender Law® as a 1L through her involvement with OUTLaw, an LGBTQ+ legal affinity group on campus. “One of the board members got a summer job by interviewing at the job fair, so I thought it would be a great opportunity to attend,” she explained. “I was also interested in the topics that were being discussed at the various sessions and was curious to learn the legal strategies the community was taking with respect to litigating LGBTQ+ rights.”

The Miami OUTLaw group elected Robin as its Activism Chair in her 2L year. In that position, she created a partnership between the University of Miami School of Law and Legal Services of Greater Miami (LSGMI). Robin and other law students worked with LSGMI to help transgender individuals change their legal names and gender markers. Demonstrating a passion for effecting long-term change, she also proactively organized and conducted a “know-your-rights” session, providing information on how one can alter legal documents once their name change has been granted by a court.

We’re proud to have students like Robin attend Lavender Law®, and encourage all our law students to seek out interviews with potential employers the way she did. “Thanks to the LGBT Bar, my horizons have broadened,” Robin stated. “A clear path has emerged, and the path is leading me to Fisher & Phillips where I will have the opportunity to train in my chosen specialty with some of the best L&E lawyers in the country.”
