Our faculty rules expressly require equal opportunity with respect to “age, ancestry, color, disability, gender identity or expression, genetic information, military status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status, and other categories covered in the University nondiscrimination policy.” University policy states our commitment to affirmative action and the building of a diverse community in all these respect. Diversity with respect to sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and the other categories listed above is part of the charge given to the Appointments Committee, which receives diversity training at the start of the academic year. We have enjoyed considerable success over the years in making offers to and recruiting LGBTQ+ individuals to join our faculty, both through the AALS process for entry-level hires and the lateral market. Hiring committees for all positions undergo implicit bias training before the hiring process begins.
